Howard Shutt Brindley..... My amazing ancestor!

Kache recently had a school assignment that required him to choose an ancestor to research and share at the "Share Fair". He chose his great, great grandfather with whom he shares his middle name. This was a great experience for our entire family and this is what he learned....
HOWARD SHUTT BRINDLEY

This is the grave of Howard and Emily Brindley. They are burried in Antimony, Utah. They had 14 children but six died as children. Five of their six children who died before adulthood are burried next to them. They are Julia, Erma, Ida, George and Leston. I can't imagine the grief of burrying one child let alone six! What an amazing example of faith and endurance in the face of such hardships!

The Written Report:

Howard Shutt Brindley By: Kache Howard White

Howard Shutt Brindley is my great, great grandfather. My parents gave me the middle name of Howard in honor of my inspirational grandfather, hoping that I will remember, honor and continue his legacy of hard work, sacrifice, faith, family and endurance when life gets hard.

My grandpa Brindley was born on September 19th, 1864 in Walsall, Staffordshire, England. He was the son of George and Jane Shutt Brindely. At the age of four he and his family left England and set sail for America. His parents had heard and accepted the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and like many others, could not be content until they could come to Zion. Even though he was only four years old he remembered his Aunt Alice crying as they were saying goodbye to board the ship. This was the last time they ever saw her. After reaching America they came across the plains with the pioneers . Though they sacrificed everything they had to come and suffer the hardships with the pioneers my grandpa said “it never affected our faith to the last”.

Grandpa and his family arrived to Melville, Utah in 1867 and lived there for two years. After a lot of searching and sacrificing they were finally able to buy a small farm in Angle, Utah. Howard’s father was often away finding extra work and so many of his father’s responsibilities became his, because he was the oldest child. One day he was out chopping willows for wood , when George, his little brother ran in front of the axe he was swinging. The axe struck him in the head and cut deep into his skull. Though he and his mother were scared to death, with much faith, many prayers and good care he was able to heal completely.

Grandpa married my grandma, Emily Humphrey Brindley on May 4th, 1888. After years of hard work and saving up they were able to buy a small farm in Angle, Utah with just enough water to get by. This is where their family began. They had 14 children, but only 8 lived to adulthood. They suffered so much with the loss of each child, but pushed forward in faith. Grandpa looked for the positive and found happiness in music. He played the accordion for his family and at dances in the community. As their children grew, education became a priority. They left the ranch in Angle and moved into the town of Kingston, Utah so that their children could go to school. This was a difficult move for grandpa; he always longed for the ranch that he and grandma had built from the ground up, but he always did what was best for his children. His family was his happiness. As grandpa’s children grew and started to leave home he said he realized that his happiest times in life were when his children were small and around the house, even though it had often been a struggle to feed and cloth them.

On March 16th, 1961 My great, great grandfather, Howard Shutt Brindley passed away at the age of 96 years old. Our family was blessed with a history he told in his own words before he died. I love it when my mom reads to me the stories of his life. My grandfather was a great example of faith, family, hard work and endurance. I am so grateful for the sacrifices he made for my family. When I grow up I want to be a great man like he was.

This is the farm in Angle, Utah that my grandpa cleared with his own two hands and one horse. This farm was passed down to my grandpa Calvin Catrell Brindley.

Howard Brindley Kingston home. Howard later left the ranch in Angle and moved his family down to Kingston (about 30 minutes away) so that his children could go to school. He said he missed Angle and always longed for the ranch, but was happy to be where his children could get an education. Much of his ranch is still owned by his posterity.

This is the grave of Calvin Cantrell Brindley. He was the second to youngest child of Howard and Emily Brindley. He was my grandfather. He died when my dad was only 4 years old. He was only 30 years old and died of apenticitis. He left behind his wife (grandma Irva) and three small children (Charlie, Dude and Juana)

The final project!!!

Kache did a great job putting this together. We stayed up until midnight the night before it was due. He cut, glued and became a master on the "cricut" to get it done in time. Not to mention all of the research he did. Kache and I both learned alot about this wonderful man! He was a great example and though he suffered many trials he always kept his chin up and had a good attitude. He was a great example of family. His meant the everything to him and there was no sacrafice he wouldn't be willing to make for them. I'm sure Kache's grandpa Howard would be proud of all of the hard work of his great, great grandson did in honor of him. I am proud of my little Kache Howard too! I am so grateful that we had the opportunity to learn more about our grandfather together!
